Weather always be alert for conditions that are right for tornadoes !! it's not just a spring time thing.. if your a Licensed ham,,, carry a radio !!
last and final QTH, I hope Friday, May 15,2009, I put up my first antenna at new QTH in Adams. it is the trusty copper JPole. (2 meters). bottom of antenna is 20 feet , now as most know, Adams is one of the lowest parts of the county. there's a huge hump ( we don't have hills in Mower County). between Adams and Austin. it crests at Co. Rd 5 and Hwy 56 (Johnsburg Road). I had good range at the GM addy, we'll have to see about this location.
I hope to get some wire up for HF this week,
antenna upgrade don't believe what instructions tell you.. Vertical antennas need a counterpoise.. my recent purchace (thanks KE1D) is a 5 band vertical and it's mounted 3 foot off the ground. antenna is 18 feet long. I put 2 radials out and it changed from a lightning rod to a real antenna !! QSO's down to Florida during the day. on 20 meters.
NTS Net control !! If anyone has HF capabilites, listen to the ARRL NTS noon traffic net on Wedsdays. I, KC0UWF, am the net control for this net. This a voice net at Noon everyday. freq is 3860 khz (3.860Mhz) on the 75 meter band. this is the MN section net.
I've done several now, and it is quite differant than FM nets. got to listen close and pay attention. I'm excited about it, I'm learning all kinds of new procedures on relaying traffic, and how to compose a net report.
We have check-ins from all over the MN area. and a few from SD.
I"m running a full size 80 meter dipole about 20 feet high, I need to get it up another 10 or 20 feet if I can. With a state of the art 1980's Kenwood TS-520 100 watts output. solid state receive, tube transmit. analog readout
Ben, K0BLR, has been coaching me in the process.
We need more activity from the SE corner of the state. we have a few that check in from Mower County, but we always could use more.
this is a great opportunity to support Ham radio and be active in message passing. Our 2 meter simplex net is a good training ground for events like this. 2 meter is wonderful for local comms, but HF is where it's at !!!
edit: I had to give this up because of time. hopefully do it again sometime
field day special antenna well. i moved and have my HF radio up and going, kind of. the only antenna I have up is my 40 meter dipole. it is 5 feet off the ground. I put it up one night in the freezing cold. so it has to work good.
believe it or not I have no problem tuning it with my Z100 tuner. I have had several QSO's on 40m out to Michigan. S7-S8 reports.
40m NVIS as some of you are aware, I put up a new antenna a few weeks ago. looking at it, it looks like a simple 40m dipole antenna. but the way it's erected is what makes it work. NVIS, Near Verticel Incident Skywave, antenna works only on the lower HF bands. 40m on down. the antenna is strung lower than 1/2 wave above ground. This causes the RF to be reflected from the ground straight up. and bounces off off the F-layer (about 250 miles high). what this does, is, eleminate the skip zone. the signal reflexs and comes down like an inverted "V" /\
a 100 watt radio should give a S-9 withing 200-300 miles during the day, and alot longer at night. (barring overseas broadcasts)
the Germans first documented this during WW2. and USGI's used it during Vietnam. these antennas can be as low as a foot and half off the ground. very quick to deploy,
anyway, in the past 2 or 3 weeks that i had it up. I worked alot of southern states. and many nets on 40m LSB. before this i used my 65 foot long wire. it worked, but i soon realized I was missing alot of stuff. I cut it for 7. 225 mHz. and strung it up about 7-8 feet above ground. I still use my LDG Z-100 antenna tuner to fine tune it.
a buddy in the UP is putting one up this weekend and we'll do a radio check with his and mine and see what happens. I think this and an 80m NVIS would be good for local comms when 2 m isn't enouph.
this is not a DX antenna. the take off angle will not bounce like a good Yagi or Dipole that's +1/2 wave above good ground.
Just my thoughts....
